Call for Extended Abstracts

UNESCO Chair in Technologies for Development: From Innovation to Social Impact
2-4 May 2016 | EPFL, Lausanne, Switzerland

General Information | Review & Selection Criteria | Key Dates | Publication

The UNESCO Chair invites authors from research, industry, policy or civil society to submit their abstracts under one of the Breakout Sessions. Extended abstracts should emphasize the value of technological innovation while also acknowledging the limits of technology in generating inclusive social and economic development.

The extended abstract should include:

  • A focused description of research objectives and research methodology, or if appropriate, description of case study objectives and outcomes.
  • Potential development impact
  • Recommendations for future research and application in practice

Abstracts in English will need to adhere to the 1,000-1,500 word limit using the prescribed template and submitted online no later than 6 November 2015.

Extended abstracts which do not adhere to these requirements will not be considered.

General Information

Authors and presenters are invited to submit extended abstracts for paper or poster presentations focusing on research results, case studies, or challenges relevant to the Breakout Sessions.

Submissions follow a two-stage process:

  • Extended abstract (1,000-1,500 words).
  • Full paper taking into account peer-reviewed feedback provided at abstract stage (5,000 words).
  • The selection of posters will be based on the submission of an extended abstract only.

Extended abstracts for full paper or poster presentations should be clear, concise, and written in English. The abstract must be well written and should be checked by someone well versed in English writing.

For full paper submissions, presenters will be requested to give a 10-minute presentation at the conference, followed by a discussion.

Presenters of a poster will be expected to make a 3-minute presentation during a set time-slot at the Conference to explain their poster and hand out any leaflets, or other information materials, they have available for viewers of their poster. A jury representing the Scientific Committee will be in attendance at the poster presentation to evaluate and select the “Best Tech4Dev Poster.”

The Scientific Committee cannot guarantee that the authors will be granted their preferred choice of presentation (full paper or poster). The decision of the Scientific Committee is final and no correspondence will be entered into.

All presenting authors who are accepted for either a full paper or poster presentation MUST be registered and the conference fees fully paid up by 14 March 2016. Arrangements and payment of travel and accommodation costs are the responsibility of the participants.

Review and Selection Criteria

The Scientific Committee will review all abstract submissions. Abstracts will be evaluated according to a review criteria based on quality, potential impact, innovation, relevance and presentation.

The submitting author will be considered as the corresponding author of the abstract. The corresponding author will receive all correspondence concerning the abstract and is responsible for informing the other authors on its status.

Notification of conditional acceptance will be sent to authors by 8 December 2015. Authors will be invited to submit a full paper by 24 January 2016, in accordance with full paper guidelines to be distributed when the time comes.

Poster presenters will be notified by 8 December 2015 and given the technical specifications.

Authors will receive their peer-review feedback and final decision of acceptance or rejection by 18 February 2016. Authors will have a short period of time to integrate any reviewer feedback before submitting the final camera-ready paper by 28 February 2016.
