Structural variations, such as copy number variants or balanced rearrangement, can have a profound and dramatic effect on the expression of genes, both mapping within and close to the rearrangement. We showed that these “local” changes result in a global modification of gene expression profiles. The workshop “Genome Structure and Expression” between Swiss- and Brazil based scientists should provide to participants and organizers an opportunity for an in‐depth discussion on the impact of genome structure in gene expression. Since the subject is a crossdisciplinary topic, participants from varied research areas, including cytogenomics, neurogenetics, cancer, epigenetics, and evolutionary and computational biology, will benefit from this event. The workshop will strengthen relations in research partnerships, providing greater researcher integration from Switzerland-Brazil, hopefully leading to the establishment of joint projects and more student exchanges in the future.
