The international community has become increasingly aware of the problem of natural disasters (Løvholt et al. 2014). “Disasters are increasing worldwide, with more devastating effects than ever before (World Bank 2014b; IPCC 2014).” Economic losses reached the highest estimated US$ 370 billion in 2011 and claimed 300,000 lives in 2010 (World Bank 2014a). Scientific partnerships and strengthening the capacity of scientists and other stakeholders is essential in the struggle to improve DRR (UNISDR 2014) and increase resilience. In addition, training needs – at all levels – remain considerable and must be seen as a primary objective in disaster reduction strategies.

Since 2008, and in response to these needs and its role as UNESCO Chair in Technologies for Development, CODEV has organized a Certificate of Advanced Studies in Disaster Risk Reduction (CDRR). The first edition took place in 2008, followed by two other editions developed in 2010 and 2012 respectively.

Based on this experience, starting November 5 2016, CODEV will launch its first collaborative Massive Open Online Course: A Resilient Future – Science and Technology for Disaster Risk Reduction, bringing together technical expertise from several EPFL labs and sections and other major partners active in the DRR field. CODEV is firmly convinced of the value of developing an interdisciplinary MOOC about DRR, bringing together technical expertise from several EPFL labs and sections and EPFL-CODEV partners. It believes to reach a greater audience, position EPFL at the forefront of this topic, showcase its expertise, and continue increasing its worldwide reputation.

This course aims to introduce participants to existing and emerging technologies suitable for disaster risk reduction while promoting the overall aim of sustainable development. The course focuses on three main natural hazards – floods, landslides and earthquakes. It also discusses the challenges and limits of adapting and adopting technologies depending on context (Global North and Global South) with examples from Switzerland, Nepal, Colombia, Philippines, and other countries.
