Science without Borders

Scholarship programme offered by Brazil

The Sciences without Borders program was created in 2011 by the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Science and Technology through their respective funding agencies – CAPES and CNPq.

The program seeks to strengthen and expand initiatives of science, technology and innovation through international mobility of Brazilian undergraduate and graduate students and researchers.

The bilateral memorandum of understanding Supporting the Science without Borders program was signed in July 2013, focusing on hard sciences.

Since February 2014 Switzerland is fully included in the Science without Borders programme.

Brazilian students and researchers interested in scientific stays abroad in the field of humanities are encouraged to check the possibilities with traditional scholarship programs of the federal agencies: CNPq (www.cnpq.br) or CAPES (www.capes.gov.br).

Programme highlights

Goal: To award 100’000 scholarships to Brazilian students to study in top world universities by 2014.

Types of scholarships:

  • Undergraduate study abroad
  • Postdoc
  • PhD Internships abroad
  • Professional Education
  • Full-time PhD
  • Visiting Researchers/Scholars

Scholarship duration: Up to 12 months. This is a one year non-degree program, as students will return to Brazil to complete their degrees.

Granted amount: Provision of round trip transportation to/from Brazil and a monthly grant (from EUR 1’480 to 2’480). The partner entities in the host countries will make arrangements to pay the students’ tuition, room and health insurance upon receipt of an invoice from each host school.

Selection of candidates: Students will be chosen through calls for proposals to be announced by CAPES and CNPq. The candidates must prove they have enough knowledge of the language required.
