BIOREFINERY FOR PALM TREE SUSTAINABLE INTEGRAL PROCESSING

Abstract

Contrary to the cases in other countries where the culture of oil palm is associated with various social and environmental burdens, in Brazil palm tree plantation shall be part of reforestation program. Vale Inc. is developing an ambitious program of palm oil and derived biodiesel production in the state of Parà in Brazil that will partly fuel its locomotives. In that context, the « Biorefinery for Palm Tree Sustainable Integral Processing » (BIOPAL) project aims at designing and evaluating an integrated biochemical biorefinery concept where the production of bioethanol is coupled to biodiesel and biogas, as well as heat and power generation. Four academic partners are involved in the BIOPAL research project: Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) in Switzerland, Universidade Federal do Paranà (UFPR) in Curitiba (Brazil), Universidade Federal do Parà (UFPA), Belém (Brazil), Universidade Federal do Tocantins (UFT), Tocantins (Brazil). Furthermore, the project benefits of the support and collaboration of an industrial partner, Vale Inc. Officially started on 1st January 2012, the BIOPAL project is expected to be completed on 31 December 2013 in the framework of the Brazilian Swiss Joint Research Programme (BSJRP).
