Modeling and simulation of the human cardiovascular system with application to the diagnosis, treatment and surgical planning of cardiovascular diseases
This project aims at carrying out research and development activities and human resources formation (master, doctoral and postdoctoral levels) in computational modeling and scientific computing and their applications in health-related areas. Specifically, we will focus on the development of simulation tools for complex physiological systems and, particularly, for the modeling of the human cardiovascular system. Hence, the physicians will be provided with complementary/auxiliary elements based on physical-mathematical models to support them in the diagnosis and/or treatment of diseases as well as in surgical planning.
To meet these requirements, the research activities will be focused on the following points: (i) the computational modeling and numerical simulation of the human cardiovascular system itself, (ii) the computational modeling and numerical simulation for the automatic identification of mechanical properties of biological tissues and (iii) the computational modeling and numerical simulation of problems involving the interaction between the tissues and the blood flow. In this manner, we expect to obtain (i) a higher understanding of the complex phenomena that take place in the onset and development of cardiovascular diseases, and (ii) to be able to furnish the medical community with additional information retrieved from the simulations that contribute to the diagnosis, treatment and surgical planning in a patient-specific framework.
