Summary
The available good-quality drinking water in Colombia is dramatically decreasing, especially in rural and small towns, due to the insufficiency of wastewater treatment systems. This factor poses risks to human health by the accumulation in drinking water sources of pathogenic microorganisms (biological risk) and toxic pollutants (chemical risk). Moreover, the water deficit obliged farmers to carry out irrigation with microbiologically and chemically contaminated waters. These facts, point out to the need to developing appropriate treatment technologies for wastewaters treatment as well as for drinking water production. Development of technologies that use solar light for disinfection and chemical decontamination is suitable in countries with high solar energy as Colombia. The helio-photo-catalytic technology studied in this project, uses the energy from the sunlight to generate, on a catalyst (TiO 2 or Fe 3+) , the very reactive hydroxyl radical (°OH), which is capable of attacking both microbiological and chemical water contaminants in water. This project addresses the development and evaluation of a fully autonomous on-site system for disinfection and elimination of organic contaminants in drinking waters and wastewaters in rural areas of Colombia. This general objective will be achieved through the execution of a work plan consisting of 5 different work packages: (1) scientific studies for drinking water, (2) scientific studies for waste water, (3) design, built, optimization, and coupling of solar and biological reactors, (4) technological evaluation in real conditions, and (5) technology diffusion. The final system is expected to have remarkable technical features as well as social, development, and environmental implications.
