Migration, Scientific Diasporas and Development in India

Development impact of Indian skilled migration

Taking the example of Indian skilled migration, the project: « Migration, scientific diasporas and development: impact of skilled return migration on development in India » offers an evidence-based analysis that shows the effects that both return and diaspora transnationalism have on home country development and identifies main factors influencing the deployment of foreign earned knowledge and skills in the Indian context.

The study draws on data collected simultaneously in the host and home countries in 2011-12. One part of the research observed skilled Indians in four European destination countries (France, Germany, The Netherlands and Switzerland). The other part examined returnees in six major Indian cities (Delhi-National Capital Region, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Mumbai and Pune).
The project was carried out by CODEV in collaboration with the International Labour Office (ILO), the Institute of Development Studies Kolkata (IDSK) and the International Migration and Diaspora Studies (IMDS) Project of the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU). The project was funded by the Swiss Network for International Studies (SNIS) and it ran between 2011 and 2013.
